Yann’s are small dogs, two or three bites at most, with just a dash of sauce and a minimal bit of yellow mustard and onions almost under the dog. Some of the really unusual regional hot dog sauces (see some here) are more intriguing than delicious, but Yann’s is one of the best I’ve ever had. Their menu extends beyond hot dogs to include hoagies, pizza, and burgers — like the Husky Burger, which adds Oliverio’s mix of peppers, mozzarella cheese, and bacon to a beef patty. But the sauce is where it is—really hot, just on the perfect cusp of too much—at least for me.
Known for its great hot dog sauce — mild, medium or hot — it makes a great topping not only for hot dogs, but also for their loaded baked potatoes and pepperoni rolls. There’s no logical reason why this broken, cheap dog with meat sauce is better than a zillion other similar dogs across the country, but there’s something magical going on here that you just can’t pinpoint. Unfortunately the shop was closed when I got there — apparently a pretty common problem, but West Virginia culinary ambassador and Yann’s follower Joel H. Brown was kind enough to send me a large crate of dressed and frozen dogs from Yann, along with very specific warm-up instructions (and a few pepperoni rolls).
