Wawa Burgers – Pass or Smash?

For many people, a gas station burger is already an automatic no-go. But with gas stations that have made-to-order food such as Wawa and Sheetz, it has reopened the door to trying one. In this article, we’re going to let you know whether to give these gas station-made Wawa burgers a shot.

How was the Wawa Burger?

First off, the burger at Wawa is BIG. 1/3 pound of 100% Angus beef. Normally a gas station burger isn’t anywhere near that big. Heck, most fast food burgers aren’t even that big. For instance, the Quarter Pounder from McDonald’s is, you guessed it, a quarter-pound. It’s crazy that the default burger at a convenience store is bigger than a Quarter Pounder.

I went for the classic lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and mayo with American cheese. That’s classic to me, anyway. There are some crazy choices available, but I decided to stick to the basics. There’s an incredible amount of options to top your Wawa burger with.

So after seeing all those options, it may seem crazy that I went with the boring, basic options.

Okay, enough talk, let’s get to it.

Is the Burger Good at Wawa?

Let’s start off with the brioche bun. It’s a very good bun! Then when you combine it with the fresh (for a gas station) toppings, we’re off to a great start.

Next, we get to the 100% Angus beef burger patty. With a description like that, it’s got to be good, right? I can’t believe I’m saying this but yes! The burger is actually decently seasoned. The toppings were ice cold. It reminds me of a cookout burger but without the charbroiled flavor. When you combine the burger patty with the soft bun it makes for a very solid burger.

I paired them up with the seasoned fries, which were awesome. Those fries taste great! If you get a burger you gotta get fries, right?

Is the Wawa Burger Better Than Fast Food Burgers Like Burger King?

I would put the Wawa burger just behind the fast food burgers like Burger King and Mcdonald’s. A case could be made that it is better. It’s very close, actually but I give the nod to the fast food burgers.

Conclusion – Wawa’s Burger is a Smash

I was pleasantly surprised by the Wawa burger. To answer the pass or smash question, it’s definitely a smash. Add some charbroiled flavor and that would really put it over the top, but it’s still pretty darn good for a gas station burger. The seasoned fries were also great. While I’d rank it a peg below a fast food burger, if you’re on the rode and in the mood for a burger, you can do a lot worse than grabbing a Wawa burger. If you’re near a Wawa location and hungry for a burger, go ahead and give one a shot!
